5 Minute Magick Rituals for Busy People

How much do you have to give today?
Notice your chest. Your shoulders. Whatever's really there underneath a performance you run constantly to avoid judgment
I ask myself some version of this most mornings. Oregano, my dog, does not. He flops in a sunbeam like it's the only appointment on his calendar, and somehow that's a more devoted practice than half of what I've paid for in workshops
The belief hiding under "I don't have time" for magic rituals
Five minute ritual lists are everywhere right now. Morning routines. Micro rituals. A dozen tiny practices packed into one scrollable post
But almost none of them ask why the last list you saved to your instagram folder never got opened again, and it’s often because it was never really about the ritual
It's the belief sitting underneath it. “I don't have time, so what's the point?”
That belief didn't come from nowhere. Somewhere we learned that rest, or stillness, or anything without an immediate payoff, had to be earned first. Productivity before presence. It’s hustle culture, cloaked as personal discipline
For queer folks, for trauma survivors, for anyone whose nervous system learned that stillness wasn't safe, five minutes can feel harder to claim than fifty. Just the act of giving yourself permission can be harder than the ritual itself
Rest as resistance
Tricia Hersey has spent years teaching this exact thing through The Nap Ministry. Her whole framework says rest is resistance, because it disrupts capitalism's demand that our worth gets measured in output
That's also a part of decolonization work. Many of the practices we're reclaiming now had to survive going underground, under systems that profited from our exhaustion. Claiming five minutes back is part of that same reclamation
Corporate wellness also tries to sell “small”, such as a five minute meditation break so you can grind harder after. This kind of small is different because you deserve rest, full stop, whether you “earned it” or not
The Nap Ministry frames rest as a divine right, something owed simply for being human, which flips the whole equation industries built businesses on. Four tenets represent that framework. Rest disrupts capitalism and white supremacy together, our bodies are sites of liberation, naps are a portal to imagine and heal, and our dream space was stolen and is worth reclaiming
Small rituals are quickcraft
Quickcraft are bite-sized rituals that fit into your day and energy levels. A ritual counts the moment you bring your attention and your intention to it, for however long you have that day. That's the whole requirement, so you don’t have to feel bad about not meeting some arbitrary time requirement
Basically, it’s spellwork sized for the life you're living right now
Here are five to start with. Small enough to happen on the exact day you need one most, no altar or extra time required
Five rituals you can do in five minutes or less
Here are 5 simple quickcraft rituals you can do in 5 minutes or less
- Pull one tarot or oracle card, breathe deeply, and let that be the whole reading
- Hold your palms near the kettle while the water heats so you can feel the warmth. Focus on your hands getting warmer and set one intention before it boils
- Say one boundary out loud, even if it's just to an empty room (your cat counts as witness, or even a plant). It still counts as protection magick
- Stand or sit at any window for one full minute. Say what you're grateful for, then what you're releasing
- Find the one place in your body that's been clenched all day and breathe into it, relax
An open magick ritual invitation that you can practice right now
Don’t worry, there's nothing to light and nothing to tidy first. Wherever you are is enough for this one
Inhale fully through your nose. Hold at the top. Exhale release out the mouth
Notice your chest, your shoulders, the back of your throat
Then just feel your body, feel anything that shifted, feel if your body feels lighter or if tension has gone out of the way you hold your shoulders or clench your jaw
You already have enough time for this
There is joy here, real joy, in a practice sized to the life you're living right now
Consistency was never the same definition as daily
You are made of more seasons than any single busy Tuesday could hold, and every one of them deserves five minutes of your attention
Rooting for you and every five minutes you claim
